Abortion Pill Reversal: It’s Not Too Late

Abortion in Canada has been changing over the last several years. Prior to 2017, surgical abortion, which is surgery that takes place in a clinic or hospital that ends a pregnancy, was the only type of abortion available. In January 2017, the drug Mifegymiso, also known as the abortion pill, became available in Canada and introduced a new type of abortion known as medical abortion.
Although Health Canada initially placed certain safeguards around the administration of this drug, within mere months several had been dropped. For example, women are no longer required to have an ultrasound to confirm gestational age and rule out ectopic pregnancy, nor are patients required to see a doctor in person before being prescribed the drug now that telehealth providers can mail the pills to women after a mere phone or video call. It should also be noted that nurse practitioners and even midwives (Quebec only) can prescribe a medical abortion.[1] Though it originally was to be used at no more than seven weeks’ gestation, the gestational age was increased to nine weeks,[2] although some providers will offer it up to as late as eleven weeks.[3]
Since the introduction of Mifegymiso, the abortion landscape has changed. The abortion pill is now responsible for over 40 percent of abortions in Canada based on 2023 statistics, and it is likely that medical abortions will soon become the leading form of abortion.[4] Although the intentional ending of pre-born life is grievous no matter the method, the growing research and anecdotal accounts that speak of the physical and emotional harm caused by these abortions is deeply troubling. See this article to learn about the adverse side effects a major abortion pill study found.
Despite this disturbing trend, there is hope. What many people do not know, and what abortion providers will not divulge to their clients, is that the abortion pill can be reversed. For women who regret taking the abortion pill, there is a way to save the baby, but they have to act fast.
To understand how the abortion pill reversal works, it is necessary to first understand that medical abortions are actually a two-step process. Women seeking a medical abortion will receive two pills, as abortionpillreversal.com explains:
The first pill is prescribed… to block the effects of progesterone. Progesterone is an essential hormone which women naturally produce that provides vital nutrients needed for the developing baby to thrive. Without progesterone, pregnancies will fail. The second drug is taken at home 6–48 hours later and causes cramping and bleeding in order to empty the uterus and expel the baby.[5]
If a woman has taken the first pill and then regrets it, she does not have to take the second pill. Instead, she can receive progesterone, which can reverse the effects of the first drug, Mifegymiso. This infusion of progesterone essentially outcompetes the effects of the progesterone-inhibiting drug. She should begin the reversal protocol within 24 hours of taking the abortion pill, although the protocol can be successful even if started up to 72 hours later. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that she sees a doctor as soon as possible and asks that he/she prescribes progesterone to prevent the loss of her pregnancy.[6]
The abortion pill reversal is not widely known in Canada, not even by doctors, but it should be noted that progesterone has been used safely in pregnancy for more than fifty years, and this treatment has proven effective 64–68 percent of the time.[7] Additionally, though we do not have a statement from a Canadian body of physicians that supports this treatment, “The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) believes that the procedure is safe and significantly more effective than “seeing what happens” without the second medication...”[8]
Given the rising rate of medical abortions and the ease with which women can procure these abortifacient drugs, it is crucial that we educate those in our circles—the people in our families, churches, workplaces, schools, and neighbourhoods—that abortion pill reversal is possible. We must also share this information with our doctors and pharmacists because without their involvement, babies cannot be saved. With that said, do you know a pro-life doctor or pharmacist who would like to be on call to assist women who have changed their minds after taking the first pill of a medical abortion? Encourage them to check out the Abortion Pill Rescue Network and to sign up to help women in their communities at Join the Network.
Together we can make a difference. We can be used by God as instruments to spread His truth, hope, and life.
